Enjoy a FREE day full of discovery and learning at the Bullock Museum for homeschool families.
Event Details
Enjoy free admission all day and explore the T. rex: The Ultimate Predator exhibit and the Texas History Galleries. Participate in hands-on activity stations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to celebrate Japan's National Foundation Day (February 11) by exploring Japanese traditions, crafts, foods, art, and music.
Museum admission is free for homeschool families and RSVPs are not required. Discounted school group rates for films in the IMAX® Theatre and Texas Spirit Theater are available from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; film tickets may be purchased in advance online and at the Museum on Homeschool Day.
Families who prefer low-sensory environments are encouraged to attend Sensory Hour at the Museum from 9 to 10 a.m.! Please contact Education@TheStoryofTexas.com to register.
Directions and Parking Information
Drop-in activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Try your hand at using chopsticks and explore what makes Japanese chopsticks different from other countries. Then, explore some foods common in Japanese cuisine.
- Engineer an earthquake-proof building while learning about Japanese pagodas and what makes them resistant to Japan's many earthquakes.
- Make a paper koinobori, a fish-shaped windsock used to celebrate Children's Day.
- Fold origami animals, with different options for every paper-folding skill level.
- Make your own kimono bookmark.
- Read different picture books about Japanese geography, history, and culture.
- Join us for a story time and craft about Japanese food.
- Explore Japanese art from the ancient world to the present day.
Available Classes
Hands-on classes give your students an opportunity to spend more time exploring topics that relate to the art and culture of the numerous communities and cultures in Texas.
Homeschool Day classes are free to attend and are available on a first-come first-served basis. The class is limited to 25 students. Accompanying adults are expected to stay with their students for the duration of the class. See class information below.

Homeschool Day Class | 10:30 a.m.
Make a haiku bookmark. Learn about haiku, a form of Japanese poetry, with a special guest artist. Then, craft your own bookmark with a picture that matches your haiku.
This class requires reading and writing skills and is recommended for students ages seven and up.
