Enjoy a FREE day full of discovery and learning at the Bullock Museum for homeschool families.

Event Details

Enjoy free admission all day, explore the Texas History Galleries, and participate in hands-on activity stations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Learn about the American Revolution and how the state and the Texas America250 Commission are commemorating the semiquincentennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Museum admission is free for homeschool families and RSVPs are not required. Discounted school group rates for films in the IMAX® Theatre and Texas Spirit Theater are available from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; film tickets may be purchased in advance online and at the Museum on Homeschool Day.

Families who prefer low-sensory environments are encouraged to attend Sensory Hour at the Museum from 9 to 10 a.m.! Register here.

Directions and Parking Information

Drop-in activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Quill Crafting: Practice writing with a quill pen and ink pot and make your own bookmark with your cursive signature
  • Texas Declaration/American Declaration: Explore the similarities and differences between the Texas Declaration of Independence and the American Declaration of Independence
  • Etch a powder horn: Discover the works of art that soldiers etched in their powder horns to stave off boredom. Then, make your own design on a cardstock horn
  • Mississippi River Race: Build and design a boat to take supplies up and down the Mississippi River and learn about the role Spain played in managing who could use the river during the Revolution
  • Donkey Discovery: Hear the story of Royal Gift, a donkey gifted to Gen. George Washington from the King of Spain, and make your own donkey hat
  • Privateer Flags: Explore the role Galveston's privateers and pirates played in the Gulf of Mexico during the American Revolution and design your own pirate flag
  • Buy tickets to see IMAX documentaries Superhuman BodyWild Rescueand T. REX, and tickets to the Texas Spirit Theater films Shipwrecked and The Star of Destiny
  • Explore Museum exhibitions with educational activity guides

Available Classes

Hands-on classes give your students an opportunity to spend more time exploring topics that relate to the art and culture of the numerous communities and cultures in Texas.

Homeschool Day classes are free to attend with registration. The class is limited to 25 students. Accompanying adults are expected to stay with their students for the duration of the class. See class information below.

Craft a Quilt | 10:30 a.m.

Discover the role that quilts played in the American Revolution, not only to protest British taxes during the Homespun Movement, but also as tools for spying! Then, craft your own fabric quilt square.
