Online Program

July 14, 2021 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Educators, join us for a FREE virtual professional development session exploring African Americans' fight for freedom and racial equality during Reconstruction and the Jim Crow era.

Event Details

The special exhibition at the Bullock Museum for the summer and fall of 2021, Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow, examines the struggle for full citizenship and racial equality that unfolded in the United States in the 50 years after the Civil War. Presented in partnership with the exhibition's creator, the New-York Historical Society, this workshop blends content overviews and primary source instructional strategies for teaching these important and relevant topics in your classrooms.

This program is available as an on-demand recording for CPE credit. To get access to the link and a certificate email Education@thestoryoftexas.com.

During the session, we will:

  • Learn new content and strategies for teaching Reconstruction and the Jim Crow Era.
  • Engage with primary and secondary sources from the New-York Historical Society's Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow and Women & the American Story curricula.
  • Analyze resources through inquiry and breakout room discussions with colleagues.
  • Model activities that use a variety of digital resources and pedagogy that can be directly turn-keyed into the virtual classroom.
  • Highlight and elevate the experiences and contributions of women and Black Americans during these time periods.
  • Connect these national events to local Texas stories and resources.
  • Take a virtual sneak peek inside the Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow exhibition.

This Zoom session is free to attend, with advanced registration required. Participants will receive access to the event, resources related to the topic, and CPE certificates (SBEC approved). This session is open to classroom teachers, preservice teachers, higher education professionals, informal educators, and homeschool educators.
