Here to Stay

The Texas Story Project.

It's 1981, Huntington Beach, California, my senior year at Mater Dei High School.

I had no future goals, no plans beyond my upcoming summer on the beautiful beaches when my father informed me that I would be attending St. Edward's University in Austin.

Knowing that he's a graduate of Notre Dame, I knew he wanted the best for me, but my grades were just mediocre. My parents already moved to Austin for a job transfer, so I knew they wanted me to follow soon. He packed all my things into my tiny Datsun B210 hatchback, and we drove the entire way to Austin. In my mind, my summer was ruined, my life would be surrounded by cowboys and tumbleweeds—instead of hot surfers and lifeguards.

Well, little did I know, that I would wind up with three wonderful Texans, my daughter and two sons, as well as six Texas-born grandchildren and a fabulous career with the best Texas-born company, H-E-B. Now, I'm a Texan through and through, with no plans to ever leave, and I devote my life to family, friends, and a love for Texas!
