Museum and School Partnerships: Innovative K-12 Programs

Programs

March 9, 2015 6:30pm - 8:30pm

How can cultural institutions best work with schools to meet the needs of 21st century learners? Join us at the Bullock Museum for ACCESS to Learning, Inc.’s annual program.

Join local teachers and representatives from cultural institutions for a panel discussion about creating innovative museum programs in partnership with the curriculum being taught in schools.

In partnership with educators from the Bullock Museum, ACCESS to Learning Inc.'s moderator, Dr. Rosemary Morrow, will explore this topic with four program developers from the Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS).

The largest state history organization in the nation, the MNHS is renowned for its use of cutting-edge technology that brings history alive for students.

Attendees will hear from panelists discussing:

Play the Past - Students using hand-held technology to explore history and extend their field trip back to the classroom.

Northern Lights: The Stories of Minnesota’s Past - Curriculum for 6th grade that tells the stories of Minnesota history by integrating key concepts in civics, economics, and geography.

Ojibwe Shoulder Bag Activity Kit - Hands-on art activity to teach American Indian culture.

History Live! - A lively video conference program to teach a variety of history topics to students

These programs meet social studies standards and teach critical thinking skills, encourage inquiry, and explore multiple perspectives. Extensive collaborations with schools were crucial in the multi-year creation phases of these programs.

Panelists from Minnesota Historical Society:

  • Wendy Jones, Director of Education
  • Jennifer Sly, Museum Education and Technology Specialist
  • Shana Crosson, Education Technologist
  • Suzi Hunn, Teacher Education Specialist

The event is free of charge, and complimentary parking will be provided in the Museum’s garage. CPE credit for teachers will be provided and light refreshments will be served.
