Discover how science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the arts have powered Texas history.

Event Details

Experience how Texans applied their math skills to comply with food rationing in World War II. Uncover the biological properties of chili peppers that make them a vital part of Texas cooking. Find out what exactly science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics have to do with Texas history!

On select Thursdays at STEAM Lab, students can drop in and explore the Bullock Museum, see demonstrations, and participate in hands-on activities with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) experts from Central Texas Discover Engineering and Museum Educators. STEAM Labs are FREE for all groups who have pre-registered for a Bullock Museum field trip, or are free with exhibit admission. Every STEAM Lab is different, and may include some of the following activities:

  • Electricity with a Van de Graaff Generator
  • Build a Lunar Landing Module
  • The Science of Chili Peppers
  • Make a Helicopter
  • Play a Civil War Probability Game
  • Evolution and Bird Beaks
  • Using a WWII Rationing Budget
  • Clean an Oil Spill
  • Create a Dust Storm
  • The Science of Pigment
  • Build and Race a Boat
  • Create a Pickle Light
