Bullock Museum announces new workshop series that examines Texas history through the lens of nature
Nature of Texas workshop series invites adults to get creative while learning from experts
JANUARY 6, 2026 (AUSTIN, TX) — The Bullock Museum is inviting the public to discover the intersection of art, history and nature during the new Nature of Texas hands-on workshop series. This three-part series taking place in January, February and March combines an expert talk with a creative, hands-on activity.
“The Bullock Museum is excited to launch a new workshop series exploring the amazing flora and fauna found in Texas,” said Kristin Johnson, Head of Public Programs at the Bullock Museum. “These workshops will incorporate new research from local experts with engaging, hands-on activities for an adult audience.”
The Nature of Texas workshops are a new addition to the Museum’s offerings for adults. The workshop series encourages the public to engage with Texas history through the lens of nature. Each session of the three-part series combines a short expert talk with a themed craft inspired by nature. Workshops are beginner-friendly and include all materials. Participants will leave with their own Texas nature-inspired handmade piece.
The Nature of Texas workshop series kicks off on Sunday, January 11 with an event themed around Austin’s favorite nighttime mammal — the bat. Join the founders of Austin Bat Refuge (ABR) for an engaging presentation about ABR’s work, the natural history of local bat species and how Austinites can peacefully coexist with these amazing creatures. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session and up-close viewing of live bats.
The series continues on Sunday, February 8 with a study in Texas flora. Program participants will join art and environmental educator Juliet Whitsett for a hands-on workshop that celebrates the shapes, colors and surprising beauty of Texas’ rarest cacti with vibrant paper cut-outs in the spirit of 20th-century French artist Henri Matisse.
The three-part series is rounded out with an exploration of Texas mushrooms with the Central Texas Mycological Society on Sunday, March 8. Program participants will explore mushrooms with all of the senses (yes, even taste) during the hands-on workshop centered around fungal observation and illustration.
The Nature of Texas workshop series takes place at the Bullock Museum at 2 p.m. on January 11, February 8 and March 8. Tickets for each workshop session are $10 for general admission and $8 for Museum Members. For more information, visit TheStoryofTexas.com.
