A Permanent Place to Call Home

More than 5,000 children in foster care in Texas are waiting for a permanent place to call home, but they often remain unseen by their communities. Journey to Adoption: A Permanent Place to Call Home, a new exhibition from the Heart Galleries of Texas, focuses on successful stories of foster care adoption from all corners of Texas.

Families are as unique as fingerprints, and once a child is matched with a family, a new story begins. This exhibition invites visitors to step into the lives of the heroic children, foster families, and adoptive parents who have experienced the life-changing process of growing a family through adoption. Through photographs and visual narratives, this month-long special exhibition offers visitors a chance to hear first-hand accounts of the importance of adoption, on view in November — National Adoption Awareness Month.

Adoption is a lot of things — it’s joy and sorrow, it’s broken yet restorative, it’s beauty through pain, it’s hope and complexity all woven together in such an incredible way. Adoption, most of all, is sacred. Our family was forever changed by the gift of adoption and our lives are now marked by a richness of belonging and deep well of gratitude that we would have never known otherwise. Foster care adoption is a path filled with challenges and triumphs, as children move through uncertain times and find stability and belonging. The stories showcased in Journey to Adoption highlight the courage of these children and their new families, who open their hearts and homes to offer love and security. The exhibit invites you to share in the complexities and unparalleled joy of the adoption experience, celebrating the hope and new beginnings that adoption can provide.

Heart Galleries of Texas works across the state to find positive permanency for Texas children through photographic exhibits that tell their stories in the hopes that families that can fulfill their needs, hopes, and dreams will see them.

The Bullock Museum, a division of the Texas State Preservation Board, is funded by Museum Members, donors, and patrons, the Texas State History Museum Foundation, and the State of Texas.
