The film follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she travels to Singapore to meet her boyfriend, Nick's family. When she arrives, she is shocked to discover that Nick’s family is one of the richest in Singapore. Rachel must survive the cutthroat world of Singapore’s high society and the drama of Nick’s extended family while deciding if her relationship with Nick is worth it.
