Texas Artisan Feature: Smith Sisters of Austin Pottery

Programs

July 22, 2015 11:00am - 4:00pm

Texas artisans tell their stories through their work. The Museum Store will feature pottery, artwork, cookbooks, food products, and literature from local companies throughout the summer. On select days, hear from the artisans themselves as they demonstrate their products and discuss how their own Texas stories inspire their creations.

The botany-influenced pottery by the Smith Sisters will be featured in the Museum Store today.

Get to Know the Artisans

The Smith Sisters of Austin, Dee Bassett and Barbara Kaul, have collaborated for 14 years. Together, with a MFA in ceramics and a B.S. in botany, they design intricately glazed garden and native plant scenes populated with lively winged creatures in multicolored slips and glazes. Each piece of hand-glazed pottery is kiln-fired transforming the glazes into brilliant, fused glass, permanently sealed to the terra cotta pottery. The Museum Store will feature a selection of their lovely pottery.
