Enjoy a day full of discovery and learning at the Bullock Museum reserved specifically for homeschool families.

This spring's Homeschool Day is all about storytelling. Discover your voice through spoken word or musical explorations. Participate in hands-on activities and special classes geared toward STEAM learning, collect educator resources, and leave with stories to tell. 

Museum admission is free for homeschool families on these date and school group rates for films in the IMAX® Theatre and Texas Spirit Theatre are available from 9:00am-5:00pm.

Available Activities

Drop-in anytime between 10:00am-2:00pm for these activities.

  • Explore Museum exhibits with educational guides
  • Engage in conversation and interact with hands-on objects in Museum exhibits
  • Participate in special classes for a more in-depth look at various topics
  • Enjoy activities that will spark imaginative and innovative thinking
  • Pick up resources to supplement your at-home curriculum provided by The Bullock Museum and various organizations
  • Visit special exhibition Purchased Lives: The American Slave Trade from 1808 to 1865

 

Available Classes

Hands-on classes taught by museum educators and partner organizations give your students an opportunity to spend more time exploring topics that relate to American history and music.

By popular demand, reserve a seat in a class in advance for a small fee! Space is limited in each class and reservations are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To allow as many students as possible access to these unique learning opportunities, we ask that you choose only one class for your student or students to attend. Tickets are required only for students, not adults. All classes are $4 per student.

Storytelling through Song

Storytelling through Song by Groundwork Music Project

Parents and Kids will be welcome to participate together in sing-along and play-along activities that focus on traditional American songs various from epochs in the nation’s history. Along with sing-alongs, families will have an opportunity to engage in dancing and movement activities, and all will have the chance to learn to play along on ukulele. This wonderful instrument is an excellent complement for traditional music and ideal for having fun and developing basic music skills. Ideal for families with children ages 8 and up.

 

Listening to Untold Stories

Listening to Untold Stories by Badgerdog Creative Writing Program

Families are invited to take part in a guided discussion and writing activity with the Library Foundation’s Badgerdog Creative Writing Program. We'll reflect on the meaning of slavery and its significance today as we take imaginative journeys across time, across the street, or even just across the lunch table. Using powerful first-person historical accounts as well as our own experiences, we’ll explore how stories engender empathy and help us to see that all of us are human. Ideal for families with children 8 and up.
