Bullock Museum to Host 11th Annual American Indian Heritage Day Celebration this Friday

SEPTEMBER 26, 2023 (AUSTIN, TX) — The Bullock Texas State History Museum, in partnership with Great Promise for American Indians, will host the eleventh annual American Indian Heritage Day celebration on Friday, September 29.  This year's event will feature dancing and drumming performances and interactive experiences for school groups and exhibition visitors, as well as a free public evening performance. A livestream of the noon performance and online resources are available for those who wish to celebrate from home or the classroom.

“We are so honored to be able to host this exciting and important annual event,” said Kaitlin Lloyd-Leva, Head of School Programs. “This holiday provides a great opportunity to connect as a community to the Tribal members living in Texas today, their historic legacies in our state, and how their cultural traditions have been passed on over time. Being able to highlight the talents of our partners, Great Promise for American Indians, and other native artists, makes this day engaging for our audience, particularly the student groups that visit on this day.”

Led by State Representative Roberto Alonzo Dist. 104 (D-Dallas), members of the Texas State Legislature passed H.B. No. 174 in 2013 to create American Indian Heritage Day, a day that recognizes and honors the history and heritage of American Indians in Texas. Held the last Friday in September each year, the celebration highlights the contributions of American Indian communities to the state with ceremonies, activities and programs.

From 10 am to 2:30 pm, school groups and Museum exhibition visitors can participate in educational activities and view dancing and drumming performances at 10:30 am and 12:00 pm. In the evening, the public is invited to explore the Becoming Texas exhibition starting at 6 pm followed by a dancing and drumming performance beginning at 6:30 pm.

For those celebrating from home or the classroom, a livestream of the 12 pm performance will be available on the Bullock Museum's YouTube channel. Additional on-demand resources, including art-making demonstrations, presentations, pre-recorded performances, and more, are available on the Bullock Museum website.
