Dive deep into an exhibition with performance and discussion in the gallery.

For the final month of music specific exhibits, Common Ground: The Music Festival Experience and Pride & Joy: The Texas Blues of Stevie Ray Vaughan, stop by in the gallery for a quick guitar lesson and conversation with a trained player who will make the content of the exhibits come to life. Fans and museum-goers can hear about the history of the blues, learn the basics of the genre and pick up new skills.

Please note: This program is located in the gallery, therefore, exhibit admission is required. An RSVP expresses your interest in the program but doesn’t guarantee a seat. Seating is limited but standing room is available.

About the Program

Musician and educator Ted Hall will share the history of Texas blues through discussion and demonstration. Join us as we explore the stories and sounds of legendary Texas blues players like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Leadbelly, T-Bone Walker, Lightning Hopkins, Albert Collins, and Billy Gibbons. This rich blues legacy provides vital background and context for Pride & Joy: The Texas Blues of Stevie Ray Vaughn.

About the Presenter

Ted Hall began playing guitar at age 8 and started giving lessons to friends and family soon afterward. Ted continued to play and teach guitar until he hit the road in 1982 where he toured for almost 3 years non stop performing in 37 States, Europe and 2 times on the North Pole playing military bases. After touring, he managed a music store in Houston, in addition to teaching and playing in local bands including short stints as a backup Guitarist for Dale Watson and Roy Head. Ted moved to Austin in 1986 and founded the Austin Guitar School on August 1, 1987 with himself as the only instructor with 15 students. The school has grown through the years with over 250 plus students taking weekly classes. Ted acts as Director of AGS and teaches there regularly.

Ted also taught Blues and Rock Guitar clinics/ workshops for the the University of Texas and the National Guitar Summer Workshop in New Milford CT, Chicago IL, and Austin from 1996-2012.

Teaching at the workshop Ted performed with Debbie Davies, Ronnie Earl, John Primer, David Grissom, and Red Volkaert. While living in Austin Ted also worked and performed  with  many of Austin's musical legends like: Rusty Weir, Tomas Ramirez, Tony Campise, TD Bell and the Blues Specialists, Paul Klemperer, Stop The Truck, Alan Haynes, Van Wilks, Tommy Shannon & many more.Ted toured Europe in 1997, 1999 and 2003 performing his own music and lots of Texas Blues.
