Join us for a Texas Focus reception, screening and conversation about the Texas-shot film, Hellion, directed by Kat Candler. Watch Candler's short film by the same name before the screening in the Texas Spirit Theater and stay for a Skype interview with one of the film's actors, Josh Wiggins.

Motocross and heavy metal obsessed 13-year-old Jacob's increasing delinquent behavior forces Child Protective Services to place his little brother, Wes, with his aunt. Jacob and his emotionally absent father, Hollis, must finally take responsibility for their actions, and for each other, to bring Wes home.

About the Film

Set in southeast Texas, the film was shot in Beaumont and Groves, Texas. It won the Narrative Feature Grand Jury Prize at the Dallas International Film Festival, the Gamechanger Emergent Woman Director Award at the SXSW Film Festival and the Grand Jury Narrative Feature award at the DeadCENTER Film Festival and was nominated for other awards as well.

About the Filmmaker

Kat Candler is an American independent filmmaker who received a degree in Creative Writing from Florida State University. Her first feature, Cicadas, won the Audience Award at the 2000 Austin Film Festival. Candler's films have had a wide audience, ranging from IFC and theaters across the country, to suicide prevention and mental health conferences.

Her screenplays have placed as a finalist in multiple competitions. Candler has won numerous awards for her films, which have played at festivals such as Austin Film Festival, Sundance, and SXSW. Candler taught as a lecturer at The University of Texas at Austin and currently resides in Austin, Texas.
