Music Under the Star, the popular World Music series, is back for a fifth hot season! Come out to the Museum for four fabulous, family Fridays in July and August. Set out your camp chairs and blankets (but please no coolers or outside refreshments) under the Star and listen to local artists perform music from around the globe.
Explore the three floors of Main Exhibits free from 6-9 pm. The Story of Texas Cafe will be open with a limited menu, and a cash bar will be available on the Plaza. Free event parking is available in the Museum's underground garage on the corner of 18th and Congress.
July 11 – Atash – This worldly band, made up of musicians from the Middle East, India, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, is an organic and accessible mix of great melodies, rocking rhythms, virtuoso jamming, orchestral textures, and perhaps even some medieval Sufi love poetry.
July 18 – Ray Wylie Hubbard – The legendary Texas troubadour/songwriter/storyteller brings greasy, rootsy, gnarly songs that achieve Hubbard's goal of a tone he defines as "decadent elegance." The acoustic duo Liz and Lincoln open the evening.
July 25 – El Tule – The ever evolving sound of El Tule is a natural progression brought forth by different backgrounds and experiences that combine influences of Cumbia, Latin Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Merengue, Rock, Salsa, and Reggae to create music that is influenced by art, history and culture. Salsa Candela will perform rueda de casino, cumbia, salsa and chachachá as well as dancing with the audience.
August 1 – Austin Nights Brass Band – Touted as the only New Orleans style brass band that hails from Austin and produces a funk/blues/jazz sound that is a product of the cross-pollination of the sister cities of New Orleans and Austin that started in the fateful aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
