On August 1, 1966, Charles Whitman climbed to the top of the University of Texas Tower and committed America’s first act of school-related mass murder. It was over 90 minutes before two courageous Austin police officers brought Whitman’s killing spree to a bloody end. The final tally staggered the quiet college town. In 24 hours, Charles Joseph Whitman murdered 16 innocent people -- including his wife and mother, both stabbed to death the night before -- and wounded another 31.

Charles WhitmanSniper ’66: The Charles Whitman Murders in the Texas Tower utilizes freshinterviews with surviving eyewitnesses including retired Texas Ranger Ray Martinez, the police officer who, along with officer Houston McCoy, killed Whitman. The documentary features never-before seen film footage and news reels, recreations, and interviews with reporters and news directors, hospital surgeons, survivors, former UT staff, and more.

Sniper ’66 was written, produced, and directed by Whitney Milam at KTBC Fox 7. The film was awarded a Telly Award as well as a Lone Star Emmy Award for “Best Historical Documentary.

Sniper ’66: The Charles Whitman Murders in the Texas Tower opens at the Texas Spirit Theater of The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum on February 1, 2010. Showing daily throughout February and March. Ticket prices are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, military, students, and youths age 18 and under.
