Shine a Light: The IMAX Experience documents an astounding stage performance by what is indisputably the world's greatest rock and roll band, filmed by America's preeminent director, and an all-star crew of the motion picture industry's leading cinematographers.
Academy Award®-winning director Martin Scorsese's concert documentary will show the world the Rolling Stones as they've never seen before. Filmed at the famed Beacon Theatre in New York City in Fall 2006, Scorsese assembled a legendary team of cinematographers to capture the raw energy of the legendary band.
Unlike Scorsese's previous big-event music films (he worked as an editor on Woodstock and shot the definitive documentary on The Band for The Last Waltz), Shine a Light focuses on the music, dispensing with the talking head device and opting instead for spare pops of vintage newsreel and TV footage as the only non-performance-based commentary on the band.
Scorsese says he hopes that audiences watching the film in a theater with a good sound system (think a 6-story IMAX screen with 5.1 surround sound) will feel as though they scored the best seat in the house at a down-and-dirty Stones concert with the band performing at its peak.
Using sixteen 35mm cameras and one Genesis Hi Def camera to shoot more than half-a-million feet of concert footage, Oscar®-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson (The Aviator, JFK) supervised a team which included several highly acclaimed directors of photography: Oscar winner John Toll (The Last Samurai, Braveheart); Oscar winner Andrew Lesnie (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong); Oscar nominee Stuart Dryburgh (The Piano, The Painted Veil), Oscar nominee Robert Elswit (Magnolia, Good Night and Good Luck); Oscar nominee Emmanuel Lubezki (Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Sleepy Hollow); and Ellen Kuras (Summer of Sam, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).
With special guest performances from Christina Aguilera, Buddy Guy and Jack White III of the White Stripes, the two Beacon concerts form the heart of the film.
Shine A Light: The IMAX Experience also features rarely seen archival footage and current behind the scenes footage and interviews shot using additional Hi Def, DV Cam, 16mm and 8mm cameras. With this extensive camera coverage and intimacy of the setting, Scorsese has created a extraordinary musical film event and given audiences unprecedented access to the Rolling Stones both on stage and off. The film has been digitally re-mastered into The IMAX Experience® through proprietary IMAX DMR® technology.
