When dinosaurs walked the Earth, monsters ruled the skies...

220 million years ago dinosaurs were beginning their domination of Earth. But another group of reptiles was about to make an extraordinary leap: pterosaurs were taking control of the skies. The story of how and why these mysterious creatures took to the air is more fantastical than any fiction.

In Flying Monsters 3D, world-renowned naturalist David Attenborough —the film's writer and narrator— sets out to uncover the truth about pterosaurs, the enigmatic creatures whose wingspans are thought to have been more than 40 feet, equal to that of a modern-day jet plane. Attenborough works with scientists to understand the incredible story of the evolution of the pterosaurs, a story that unfolds in such stunning locations as New Mexico’s “Ghost Ranch,” the Jurassic Coast of Lyme Regis in Britain, an ancient pterosaur landing site in Southern France and a fossil pit in Germany where near-perfect pterosaur specimens have been found.

For a special treat after the film, viewers can walk a few blocks from the IMAX Theatre to the Texas Natural Science Center at the Texas Memorial Museum on the University of Texas campus. There, you will see a full size cast of the Texas Pterosaur, one of the largest of these flying monsters discovered by UT paleontologists in West Texas. The central question of the film Flying Monsters 3D and one of the greatest mysteries in paleontology is: how and why did pterosaurs fly? How did lizards the size of giraffes defy gravity and soar through prehistoric skies? Driven by these questions, Attenborough starts to unravel one of sciences more enduring mysteries, discovering that the marvel of pterosaur flight has evolutionary echoes that resonate even today.

After millions of years of successfully dominating the skies, what happened to these magnificent creatures? Did a meteor 65 million years ago cause their ultimate demise? Was it the rise of birds that eventually drove them to extinction? Audiences will marvel at the pterosaurs’ view of a world they dominated for millions of years, in an adventure film that soars to new heights and dramatically changes our understanding of pterosaur evolution.

Applying the same state-of-the-art 3-D CGI technology used in Avatar, Flying Monsters also employs pioneering scientific techniques and recent paleontological finds to bring the story of giant flying monsters to the giant screen. Audiences of all ages will be in awe as they enter a prehistoric world and experience as never before the real Flying Monsters that once ruled the skies.

Produced by award-winning Atlantic Productions in association with Sky 3D and distributed by National Geographic Entertainment’s Cinema Ventures (NGCV), the film has already earned accolades, including a 2011 BAFTA Award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts; Best 3D Program by the 2011 Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival; and Best Science Film from the Association of International Broadcasting.
