Volunteer Opportunities
Docent Volunteer
Docent Volunteers lead guided tours of the Museum's exhibits for a diverse audience of adult visitors. By using specific presentation techniques, Docents enhance the visitor's experience by making the Story of Texas meaningful and memorable.
Essential Functions
- Volunteers lead requested tours through the Museum's exhibits.
- Volunteers organize and lead walk-in tours.
- Volunteers lead requested special events/Museum staff tours.
- Volunteers accurately convey historical information to visitors as presented in the Museum's exhibit content.
- Volunteers provide exceptional customer service by answering questions, offering information and giving directions to visitors.
Commitment
- Volunteers agree to volunteer a minimum of four times per month.
- Shifts vary from 1 to 3 hours depending on the activity.
- Regular, weekly scheduled times and shifts are preferred.
Training
- Orientation to the Volunteer program
- Exhibit content trainings (for each floor you wish to teach)
- Scheduled Docent Volunteer meetings
- Observe/Co-teach at least 3 tours given by Museum staff or other Docents
- Evaluation of tour by Museum staff
Desirable skills
- Volunteers must be able to engage a diverse group of adults.
- Volunteers must have a knowledge of and an interest in Texas history.
- Previous experience as a docent or a general tour guide is preferred.
- Fluency in another language is preferred.
- Weekend and evening availability are preferred.
Note: May require prolonged periods of standing and/or walking.
