Educator Professional Development

The Museum offers a variety of programs and resources designed for elementary, middle, and high-school educators that explore artifacts in the Museum's core and special exhibitions, interdisciplinary curriculum integration, and methods for teaching with artifacts.
Workshops take several formats, including half-day and full-day events, multi-day collaborations with other institutions, and interactive videoconference programs.
All sessions provide:

• Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours
• Teaching strategies
• Connections to the TEKS
• Free parking for on-site programs
All programs require advance registration. $15 refundable deposit required for each reservation. Please review the schedule of programs before registering and call (512) 936-4649 to make your reservation today. If registering for a program less than two weeks in advance, call to confirm space is still available. Programs may be canceled at any time due to insufficient enrollment.

4th Saturday Professional Development Workshops

Beginning in September of 2011 and held the fourth Saturday of the month, these informal sessions introduce topics related to the Museum's core exhibits and present relevant hands-on activities for the classroom. Earn CPE hours, explore the exhibits, and collect TEKS aligned lesson plans and other relevant resources during these fun and cross-curricular workshops.

Museum 101: Teacher Orientation Workshop

From self-guided visits to dramatic performances and docent led tours, the Museum has something for all kinds of learners. Before your class visits the Museum, attend a FREE teacher orientation workshop and collect resources to help you prepare for your museum visit including helpful hints about how to arrange a field trip and how to integrate a museum experience into your school’s curriculum.
Led by the education department staff, these workshops are designed to acquaint K-12 teachers with the Museum’s resources and to prepare educators to visit the Museum with their classes. The workshops explore the content and context of the Museum's Exhibits, demonstrate methods for teaching with artifacts, and provide suggestions for integrating primary sources into classroom curricula.
Tango Alpha Charlie: Texas Aviation Celebration Professional Development Workshop

The history of aviation in Texas is the story of industry innovation, record-setting achievements, gravity-defying feats and the soaring human spirit. This professional development workshop, based on the Tango Alpha Charlie: Texas Aviation Celebration exhibition, focuses on how to make the history and science of flight relevant and personal for students. Each educator will receive a FREE TEKS and STEM aligned interdisciplinary Educator Guide designed for K-12 classrooms.
Gone to Texas! Professional Development Workshop

Grade Levels: 4-12
This three hour professional development workshop, based on the Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America Through Galveston Island traveling exhibition, focuses on how to make immigrant history relevant and personal for students.
Attendees will examine the effect of immigration on our lives today through primary source documents, oral histories, and local immigrant histories. Educators will receive a FREE TEKS aligned Educator Guide with an orientation to the Museum and its educational programs, discover the excitement of object-based learning by exploring primary source material, and learn about conducting oral histories and investigating local immigrant histories.

Pre-Service Workshops

Led by the Education Department staff, these workshops are designed to acquaint pre-service educators with the Museum’s resources and education department. Distance Learning Videoconference Workshops
Can't make it to the Museum? Don't worry - the Museum can come to you through videoconferencing. All Distance Learning professional development workshops are $350.00 with no limit on attendance. Almost all on-site professional development workshops can be delivered through distance learning.
