Living a Dream

The Texas Story Project.

Shane Lechler, punter for the NFL Houston Texans, has been living his football dream since his days playing both sides of the ball at East Bernard High School.

Lechler began his career as a punter on the advice of legendary Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum. Drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 2000, Lechler played fourteen seasons there, setting multiple team and league records and playing in seven Pro Bowls. In 2013, Lechler signed as a free agent with the Houston Texans.

To date, "Golden Toe" award-winner Lechler holds both the best gross punting average in NFL history (47.5 yards) and the NFL record for reaching 50,000 yards punting in the shortest amount of time.

In this Texas Story Project video, Shane Lechler reflects on what football has meant in his life and why the sport is much more than just Xs and Os.
