Roller Derby Skates

Though many of the women who joined Austin's roller derby movement in 2001 had not skated since childhood, they embraced the sport and were quickly assigned to teams.

Any woman was welcome to join, and an instructor was brought in to teach the basics of skating. A training program was implemented and a rules committee formed to tailor roller derby into a twenty-first century sport.

During her time with the Texas Rollergirls, Cristen Perks, or "Sandy Ravage," skated for the rec league, the Firing Squad, and the Hell Marys.
